Many of our trips include meals - so we are often asked - what will you be eating while you are on a trip with us in Costa Rica?

While there are many options, and just like the world over, there are restaurants that serve food from other countries as well, today we are going to talk about the main dishes that Costa Rica is known for and that you most certainly will have a chance to eat while on your trip – especially if meals are included in your itinerary.

Costa Rican food is a fusion of indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean influences, with an emphasis on using fresh, locally sourced ingredients. The food reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage and its abundance of natural resources, with a diverse range of dishes that are both flavorful and healthy.

One of our favorites and most popular dishes in Costa Rica is Gallo Pinto, a traditional breakfast dish made with rice and beans. The dish is typically seasoned with onions, peppers, and other spices and served with eggs, tortillas, and fried plantains. The combination of rice and beans provides a good source of protein, while the spices add depth and flavor to the dish.

You will certainly be offered Gallo Pinto while on your trip. Give it a try, and it just might be something you will crave too!  We have people come back and take a cooking class just to learn how to make this tasty dish!

If you are spending time on the river, you will surely enjoy a river lunch.  This will be a hearty meal of fruits, sandwiches or tacos, and cookies.  It will be a sumptuous feast that will appear on the side of the river provided by the guides just when you are ready!  Everyone on the river feels full and fed, however, some like to bring snacks as well for some of the in between times in your kayak.

For your dinners, there will be a variety of meals.  Sometimes you will order off the menu whatever looks good to you, other times you will be served “family style” meaning there will be a variety of dishes and you will get to sample everything available.  If you are really lucky, our guides will cook for you.  This happens most often on a week of rivers, but you’re in for a treat as they are excellent cooks as many reviews attest!

We are going to mention just a few types of meals you can expect to be offered for lunch or dinner on your trip.
