When is the best time to travel to Costa Rica? Here are some of our favorite reasons why you should come during the off season!

Why the Offseason is the Best Time to Travel to Costa Rica!

Costa Rica is a small country located in Central America that boasts incredible natural beauty, diverse wildlife, and stunning beaches. It is a popular tourist destination, and for good reason.

While the country is a great place to visit year round.  It is generally around 70 degrees and rainy pretty any month.  Most people travel to Costa Rica when the weather where they live is cold.  

However, we feel the months of June to September are particularly special as they are considered low or off season. Read on to learn why you should travel to Costa Rica during these months!

Lower Prices

     

Low season means that there are fewer tourists, and therefore lower prices for accommodations, tours, and activities than during the high season.

Coming during the low season means can get excellent deals on hotels, resorts, and vacation rentals, allowing you to save money while still enjoying all that the country has to offer. 

Additionally, you can take advantage of discounted airfare and rental car rates, making your overall trip more affordable.

Less Crowded

As we said before, during the low season, there are fewer tourists, which means that you can enjoy the beaches, parks, and other attractions without the crowds. You can have a more authentic experience as you interact with the locals, try local foods, and immerse yourself in the culture. 

The low season also means that you can have more flexibility in your travel plans, as there will be fewer people competing for the same experiences. This is especially important if you want to visit popular destinations like Manuel Antonio National Park or Arenal Volcano, which can get very crowded during the high season.

Lush Greenery and Wildlife

Another reason to visit Costa Rica during the months of June to September is that this is the rainy season, which means that the vegetation is lush and green.   Don’t let this scare you.  You will be hard pressed to come to Costa Rica for a 7 day trip and not have any rain.

Rain doesn’t ruin your plans.  It is a warm rain that sometimes you won’t even notice it’s falling – especially if you’re doing a water activity.  If not, you simply throw on a poncho and continue with the activity.

The rain also provides a source of water for the plants and animals, making it an ideal time to see wildlife in their natural habitats. You can spot monkeys, sloths, and exotic birds in the rainforest and sea turtles on the beaches. 

Additionally, the rainforest canopy provides a more comfortable climate for hiking and other outdoor activities during this season.

Surfing and Water Sports

The rainy season is also the best time for surfing and water sports. The waves are bigger and more consistent, making it ideal for surfers of all levels. The beaches are also less crowded, allowing you to have more space to yourself. 

Costa Rica has some of the best surfing spots in the world, such as Playa Grande, Tamarindo, and Pavones, among others. You can also try other water sports such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling. 

The low season is also the best time for white-water rafting, as the rivers are swollen with water, providing more adrenaline-pumping thrills.

Whale Watching

June to September is also the peak season for whale watching in Costa Rica. The humpback whales migrate from the Southern Hemisphere to the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica to mate and give birth. You can witness these magnificent creatures up close on a whale watching tour. 

You may also spot dolphins, sea turtles, and other marine life. Some of the best places for whale watching in Costa Rica include Marino Ballena National Park, Drake Bay, and the Gulf of Papagayo.

Festivals and Events

Costa Rica has several festivals and events that take place during the months of June to September.

While many have heard of Fiestas de Palmares, one of the most significant festivals that is a ten-day party  in January.

However, the country also celebrates other festivals and events during the low season, such as the International Arts Festival, which takes place in August in San Jose. You can also enjoy the Independence Day celebrations on September 15th, which includes parades, music, and fireworks.

If it works in your schedule, these festivals are great to add into your itineraries and will be a memorable addition to your trip!

Volunteer Opportunities

If you are interested in volunteering, the low season is an excellent time to do so.   Due to less tourists, and school vacations, many organizations and conservation projects offer volunteer opportunities during this time.

This will allow your trip to take on more meaning as you to contribute to the conservation efforts and make a positive impact on the environment and local communities.

There are so many projects available that they can fit your family or groups interests.  You can volunteer to work with animals, teach English, or help with community projects just to name a few.

As you can see, the months of June to September are a fantastic time to visit Costa Rica!  The low season offers more benefits than you might originally think and can be a great summer vacation! So, whether you are an adventure seeker, a nature lover, or just need a place to relax, this is the time and place for your next vacation!
