I’m Reta Boychuk paddler and adventure traveler from Canada. I’m in Costa Rica for the next few months paddling rivers, practicing my Spanish and trying to take in as much as I can.  I have been in Turrialba for just over a week now and it is a fun and action packed city with great access to rivers.

If you’re considering traveling to Costa Rica it can be an amazing adventure, yet it’s helpful to know a few things to make your trip smoother and more enjoyable here are some of the tips I can pass on that helped me prepare and along the way so far.

10 things to know before traveling to Costa Rica:

1. Don’t Miss the Pura Vida Spirit

Costa Rica’s national motto, “Pura Vida,” translates to “pure life” or “simple life.” It’s not just a phrase—it’s a way of life. Expect to be greeted by friendly, laid-back locals who embrace a relaxed pace. Take a deep breath, go with the flow, and immerse yourself in the natural beauty around you. Whether you’re on a beach or in the mountains, you’ll love this warm, welcoming culture!

2. Wildlife is Everywhere

Costa Rica is a paradise for nature lovers, with an incredible diversity of wildlife. From monkeys swinging through the trees to sloths lazily hanging out, you’ll encounter fascinating creatures at every turn. In national parks or reserves, wild animals might be closer than you expect—so remember to keep a respectful distance. And while you’ll likely meet some friendly local dogs, it’s best to avoid petting or feeding them as they may become pests.

3. Weather Can Be Unpredictable

Costa Rica is known for its two seasons: the dry season (November to April) and the rainy season (May to October). But even in the “dry” season, rain can surprise you, especially in the mountains and rainforests. Be prepared by packing lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, sturdy shoes, and a good rain jacket. Umbrellas, or *sombrillas*, are a popular and handy accessory here—locals often have them on hand, and I recommend picking one up as soon as you arrive!

4. Eco-Friendly Culture

Costa Rica is a leader in eco-tourism and environmental conservation, and sustainability is a core part of the culture. Respect wildlife, follow “Leave No Trace” principles, and do your part by bringing a reusable water bottle and minimizing waste. It’s easy to contribute to the country’s eco-friendly efforts while enjoying its pristine natural beauty.

5. Language

While Spanish is the official language, many locals in tourist areas speak English, particularly in places like San José, Arenal, and the beaches. But don’t hesitate to learn a few basic Spanish phrases—it’s appreciated and can make your experience even richer. Simple words like *”Hola”* (Hello) and *”Gracias”* (Thank you) can go a long way. I also recommend having the Google Translate app on your phone, which has come in handy for me as I practice my Spanish!

6. Health and Safety

Costa Rica offers good healthcare, particularly in urban areas, but it’s always wise to travel with insurance that covers medical expenses. Tap water is generally safe to drink in most regions, though in rural areas, bottled water may be a safer bet. Be mindful of insects, especially in tropical areas, and use repellent to protect against mosquitoes. A neat tip I learned during a tour with Rosa from Yhamore Agro-Ecotourism: the *Limoncillo* plant (aka “little lemon”) can naturally repel mosquitoes—just carry a seed with you for extra protection.

7. Transportation

Costa Rica’s public transportation is affordable, but it can be a bit slow and unpredictable. Renting a car offers more flexibility, especially if you’re exploring remote or rugged areas. Be prepared for varying road conditions, and in some places, a 4×4 may be needed. Taxis are safe and convenient, but always opt for official ones to ensure a secure ride.

8. Costa Rica is Safe, but Be Cautious

I currently live in Turrialba and feel completely at ease exploring the city on my own. When traveling with Amazing Vacations, I’ve always feel incredibly safe, and their guides are fantastic—knowledgeable, friendly, and full of insider tips on the best places to eat, explore, and hidden gems to discover. Costa Rica is known as one of the safest countries in Central America for travelers, unlike any destination, it’s good to stay mindful, especially in busy tourist areas. Simple precautions, like keeping an eye on your belongings, avoiding solo walks at night in unfamiliar spots, and using official taxis, can help ensure a smooth experience. It’s also a great idea to have the Google Translate app handy and brush up on a few basic Spanish phrases to help navigate and connect with locals. Whether you’re here for a quick getaway or a longer adventure, Costa Rica is a welcoming and vibrant place to explore!

9. Currency and Payments

The official currency is the Costa Rican colón (CRC), but U.S. dollars are widely accepted, particularly in tourist-heavy areas. Credit and debit cards are commonly used, though it’s a good idea to carry some colones for small purchases or when venturing off the beaten path. I personally exchange money into colones before leaving home and use ATMs to withdraw more as needed.

10. eSIM Cards and WhatsApp

To stay connected during your trip, consider getting an eSIM card if your phone supports it. Costa Rica has affordable mobile data plans that work seamlessly across the country. WhatsApp is widely used here, not just for messaging, but also for taxi bookings, business transactions, and staying in touch with locals. Having data access will make your trip smoother and help you stay connected to all the great experiences Costa Rica has to offer.
