We get asked all the time – Which Costa Rica coast is better to visit for my vacation?

The Pacific and Caribbean coasts are both amazing – but they are different and neither one is right for everyone.  While it is possible to see both coasts on your trip, unless you are able to stay for two weeks, we recommend only visiting one Costa Rica coast on your trip.

The best option is to come down twice and visit both!

Costa Rica Coast - Pacific

The pacific side of the country has a more North American vibe to it.  It tends to be more high end and have more lodging options.  It also tends to be more crowded and touristy.  There are areas less traveled – but it is generally due to the fact that you yourself will have to spend  more time traveling to get there.

There are many National Parks and there are a lot of things to do.  Any activity that you might want to do – is likely available on this side.  This is the most popular side of Costa Rica and one most people want to go visit.

This is the place you want to go if you want to experience on of the most popular and famous beaches in Costa Rica.  Manuel Antonio beach is rated in the top 25 beaches in the world by Trip Advisor’s travelers and has an amazing National Park.

There are many beach options on the western side of Costa Rica.  You can find touristy crowded beaches and remote secluded beaches.  Be sure to plan some travel time if you want a secluded beach as you’ll need to drive away from the crowds.  You can find some true gems if you travel to the Nicoya Peninsula.  The Pacific coast is also closer to the international airports.

Along with beach options you’ll have plenty of hotel options.  From high end all inclusive resorts to local hostels and everything in between you are sure to find accommodations that will fit your needs in this area.  If you want lodging right on the beach or just a few steps away you will find it on the Pacific Coast.

There is something for everyone on the Pacific coast – which is why you’ll also find more people.  There will be more tourist options and will be able to enjoy a multitude of choices due to this.

You’ll get a completely different experience on the Caribbean side of the country.  This area enjoys a more European influence and you’ll also find some Jamican and Rasta influences due to close proximity to the area.

You might feel you get a more local or party influence.  While these experiences are available on both coasts, it is more prominent in the Caribbean.  It is not uncommon to hear music and get swirled up in dancing as you walk the streets.  Here the Pura Vida lifestyle is alive and well and on display.

It is not as developed so your options will be more limited.  You won’t be able to find as many hotels or as high of luxury accommodations or eateries.  However, the charm and peace of its many untouched areas more than make up for more rustic lodging.

Due to this, you might find that your budget goes farther when you head to the East and you can use the extra to take in the Cahuita National Park, visit the Sloth Refuge Center, or go snorkeling.

There is much better Snorkeling and Scuba Diving on the Pacific side.  The beauty and variety in the area is unmatched by her sister shores.  There are more areas to explore and more to see that is vibrant and plentiful.  If exploring the world below the waves is a high priority, this is the side you must go to!

This is the coast to head to for the adventurous, explorers and wanderers who want a different experience than most and are looking for a new experience.

No matter which Costa Rica coast you choose, you are sure to enjoy the warm waters and sandy relaxation that can be found in the temperate climate and welcoming atmosphere of the entire country of Costa Rica.  It is where Pura Vida can be found inside of everyone!
