The Perfect Kayaking Trip For Beginners

We designed this Costa Rica trip for two types of kayakers:

#1: Those who have always wanted to learn to kayak, who may be beginners and just starting to roll.

#2: Those individuals who have kayaked but need a boost of confidence and would like instruction.

Our goal with this trip is to help you build confidence on the river while still experiencing the best Costa Rica has to offer. We have included a balance of kayaking and rafting to help build your confidence on the river.

Build Your Kayaking Confidence Throughout The Trip

We will start the week working with you along an easy stretch of river building your kayaking skills. At times we may split into two groups depending on the ability levels of each group. You will get a chance to paddle easy Class II and Class III sections of river throughout the week.

You’ll finish off the week running the famous Pacuare River which boasts 52 Class III and IV rapids in a raft with our team, and have a chance to learn how to read rapids and find safe lines through more difficult sections of a river. We’re sure that the Pacuare will be the highlight of your entire trip!

Non-Kayaking and Off-River Activities

Because this trip is for beginners and learners we make sure that our best instructors are at your disposal. If kayaking every day sounds like too much for you we are happy to add some non-kayaking activities such as hiking, ziplining, canyoning, or mountain biking.

You’ll truly experience the best of Costa Rica’s rivers and everything else the country has to offer.

What Ability Level Is This Trip For?

The Confidence Building Week of Rivers trip is perfect for beginners and intermediate kayakers. If you are able to roll a kayak in a pool or if you used to have a confident roll but are slowing down or need more practice, this is the perfect trip for you.

On this trip, we will spend much of our time on sections of rivers that will give you more confidence in your abilities. You’ll have a very low guide to student ratio the entire week as we build in difficulty throughout the trip. We finish the week rafting down the Pacuare River.

If you are coming with a group of mixed experience kayakers, we will make accommodations to ensure more experienced boaters can experience bigger, more difficult sections of the river.

If you have questions about dates for this trip, please talk to us and we might be able to do a confidence building week in conjunction with other trips.

Can I bring a spouse, partner or family with me for the week?

YES! We have great options to keep spouses, friends and even kids super busy and having as much fun as you are having on the river. Just let us know if you need more info about options.

Additional Group Trip Information

Group Size

Our trips are designed for small groups. If fewer than 4 participants are registered, the trip will still run — it will not be canceled. However, there may be a slight adjustment:

  • Group dinners may not be included and will typically be on your own rather than organized for the group.

  • Lunch will be lighter and more picnic-style (such as pastries and easy river snacks), but still enough to keep you energized and ready for a great day on the river.

All river activities, guiding, safety support, transportation, and logistics will continue as planned.

Room Occupancy & Single Supplement

Trip pricing is based on double occupancy rooms, which means:

  • Two people per room

  • Two separate beds

If you prefer a private single room, this can be arranged for an additional fee. Please let us know in advance so we can confirm availability and provide the exact cost.

Non-Paddler Option

If someone in your group chooses not to paddle during the River Trip week and instead participates in alternate land-based activities, there is an additional cost of approximately $400 per person.

This fee covers:

  • Daily transportation to and from alternate activities

  • Activity coordination and logistics throughout the week

Important clarification:

  • If you are on the river each day (in a ducky or raft when needed), you are considered a paddler for pricing purposes.

  • non-paddler is someone who chooses to participate in alternate activities instead of being on the river.

If you are bringing a non-paddler, please let us know as soon as possible so we can make the proper arrangements and confirm exact pricing.

Solo Week Fee

For designated Solo Weeks, there is an additional fee of $175.

If another kayaker joins the week at the last minute, we will gladly refund this additional solo fee.
